Sago cooked for Fasting (Sabudana khichdi for Vrati)

Navratri is one of those festivals in India, which is celebrated by about 80 % of the citizen. In this festival, many worshipers, do fasting for first and eighth day of the festival. Some do it for all 9 days, and eat proper food and grains on the 10th day. And in many families, they do not eat and cook Garlic and Onions for the 9 days. I even knew some people, who do fasting for the whole day, and eat complete food including grain, one time at a day mostly after sunset. Some people only eats fruits and some dishes on these 9 days, which are made of sago (sabudana), Makhana, potatoes, etc. Here, is one of the recipe of Sabudana cooked with potatoes and peanuts. Dum Alu with no Onion-Garlic

In India, on auspicious day of festivals many people do not eat Onion and Garlic's. When I got married, it became really tough job for me as my family do not eat onion and garlic in festivals. I use to think, it's not possible to make curry without onion, and so always preferred to make dry vegetables. Few months back, I met a very dear girl - Madhuri, and in a small conversation, very casually she told me her mother's trick of making curries, as they don't eat garlic, and onion only on specific days. Believe me this trick really works. And I got to know, being non Onion- garlic eater, is not tough. And no one, ever gets to know, that it doesn't have Onion and Garlic, until and unless you tell them. Palak-paneer for non Onion-Garlic eaters

In India, lot of people do not eat Onion and Garlic. Some of them do not eat on some festivals, and some of them do not eat Garlic- Onions through out their life time. For some people, it is because their culture do not allow them to do so. And for some people, it is the tradition they are following from generations of not eating Onion and Garlic during Festivals, and for some people, it is their health which didn't permits them from having Onion and Garlic. I still remember, first year of my marriage and Navratari festival arrived, and I came to know from my in-laws family, that we are not suppose to cook and eat onion, garlic and eggs, throughout the festival, i.e. 9 days of the festival. My reaction was, " Ooooooooohhh, mmmmmy gggggod".
